62You Can Design Your Own Stitchery Patterns
Stitchery Patterns
All of us stitch in different ways. Some of us like to follow a predesigned pattern and some of us like to make our own. Others prefer freeform. There is no right or wrong.
Those who like to follow a pattern often use the transfer method. After purchasing an iron-on embroidery transfer, they place the design on their fabric using a hot iron. Then they follow instructions carefully, often using colors that are included with the transfer instructions. It is also possible to construct your own transfer. In this case, you design your own transfer on tracing paper using a heat-transfer pen or pencil sold for this purpose.
Many stitchers like to work from charts. There are two basic types. Box charts are generally used for simple stitches like cross stitch, tent stitch, and half cross stitch. Line charts are usually used for more complex canvas work stitches. On both types of charts, different threads will be indicated by different colors. Thread colors and types may also be indicated by symbols, letters, or different types of lines. In any case, there is no standardization. Most charts are accompanied by their own key.
Creative stitchers prefer to chart their own designs using inspiration from patterns found in everyday life, photographs, or even coloring books. Those technically inclined may also choose to work with cross stitch charting software and a scanner. Using this software, you can scan in your image and re-color it, or you can create your own design.
Whether you choose to use a preprinted stitchery pattern or you like to design your own, it’s always fun to be open to change. Everything good doesn’t have to be planned out in advance. Intuition will help you find a path where you encounter the unexpected. And, while many of us would prefer certainty, Creativity demands flexibility. Serendipity opens the door to innovative stitchery patterns!
